Congress MP Randeep Surjewala on Monday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Haryana government, accusing Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini of failing to manage the flood situation in the state.
In a post on X, Surjewala alleged that the government was “busy cracking jokes” while severe flooding wreaked havoc, destroying crops across 3 lakh acres, claiming six lives, and sweeping away thousands of cattle. He said the overflowing Ghaggar and Yamuna rivers had inflicted massive damage on large parts of Haryana.
“Rivers in Haryana are overflowing, fields submerged in water, Nayab Saini government absent, ‘busy’ cracking jokes! 3,00,000 acres of crops destroyed, 6 people lost their lives, thousands of cattle swept away! From Ghaggar to Yamuna, everything in flood, heavy losses!” Surjewala wrote.
He accused the state administration of negligence, citing lack of arrangements for water drainage and no efforts to clear silt from emergency drains. Surjewala also targeted the Centre, claiming both Haryana and Punjab had been left to fend for themselves without adequate relief or compensation.
“The BJP government has left Haryana, like Punjab, to its fate. Neither were drains cleaned, nor flood management systems prepared. Even now, no relief, no drainage arrangements, no compensation. The Modi government has completely washed its hands of Haryana and Punjab,” he said, urging the Saini government to act decisively instead of “jokes and laughter.”
The criticism comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a fresh alert for Haryana and Punjab, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall across several districts including Karnal, Panipat, Ambala, Chandigarh, and Panchkula, with wind speeds likely reaching 30–40 kmph.
Meanwhile, several other parts of North India remain battered by floods and landslides. In Himachal Pradesh, the death toll from the monsoon disaster has climbed to 320, while in Jammu and Kashmir, over 30 lives were lost in a recent landslide near the Vaishno Devi shrine.
